For those who come to Rio, either for business or leisure purposes, cannot miss the opportunity to visit some of the cities around it.
Some of them can be visited in just one day or during the weekend.
One of these cities is Petrópolis, that is only one hour away from Rio de Janeiro city.
Petrópolis history begins around 150 years ago The city was a connection between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. D. Pedro I,
was very impressed with the weather and the beauty of the city so, he decided to buy Córrego Seco farm in 1830. His son, D. Pedro
II ,inherited the farm and, thanks to the major Júlio Frederico Koeler (army engineer of our Royalty) and to Paulo Barbosa ( the
majordomo of the imperial house), the farm became the city of Petrópolis. The city was founded on March 16, 1843 and also
received a urban plan.
Some characteristics of this plan can still be noticed until today just by walking around the streets of the historical center, that before
used to be the center of Córrego Seco.

Imperial Museum
The Imperial museum, was located in the old imperial palace, which was D. Pedro II favorite house.
The construction .started in 1845 and it was finished in 1864. It is a neoclassic style construction
and it is considered an ordinary house for sovereign standards. Later, it was adapted as a country
house without losing its elegance.
The main attraction is D. Pedro II crown that can be seen with some security restrictions.
It is made out of chiselle gold and decorated with brilliants and pearls. You can also visit the
empress´ living room, dining room, music room, D. Pedro II bedrooms and the jewelry room,
besides a temporary exposition room. It has a great amount of objects including art works that have
a valuable meaning to our history.

Crystal Palace
Palácio de Cristal / Crystal palace
Located in the old Confluence Square, it was built at the join stock corporation of de Saint-Sauvers
Les Arras, in France, in 1879, for the horticultural Association of Petrópolis. The president was
Conde D´Eu, princess Isabel´s
husband. It was built to serve as a place for expositions and parties.
It was inaugurated on a Sunday Easter of 1888, in which the princess together with her kids, set the slaves free.
The crystal palace belongs to the National patrimony and it is part of the architectonic and the
landscape project of the Confluência square.
Tombado pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, integra o conjunto arquitetônico
e paisagístico da Praça da Confluência.
Orchid-house Binot
It was founded in 1870 by Pedro Maria Binot. He was the son of the french Jean Baptista Binot, who was in charge of the Imperial
palace. The place has an international reputation. There you will find a great variety of orchids that are exported to other countries,
mainly to United States, Germany and Japan.
