Floresta da Tijuca Tijuca’s forest is one of the three biggest areas of Tijuca’s National Park – the other two areas have their main reference Corcovado’s mount and Pedra da Gávea, including everything that surrounds them. Composed of a complex of three big forests, the access is very easy and diversified. You can reach this beautiful paradise from the following districts: Tijuca, Botafogo, Jardim Botânico, Gávea, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, Jacarepaguá, Grajaú, Vila Isabel, Rio Comprido and Laranjeiras.

The Forest’s history begins at 1861, when D. Pedro II ordered the replantation of native species on a huge extension of land that had been deforested for the plantation and extraction of wood. So, this is the first attempt at ecological reconstitution that we have ever heard in Brazil.

Mata Atlântica is a unique forest in the world, and because of this it has received the Biosphere Reservation Register from Unesco. Its area was extended from most of Pernambuco state all the away down to Rio Grande do Sul. Only 3% of this territory was able to be saved in which 14% is in Rio de Janeiro.

Inhabited by little animals, the forest resources are fascinating. There you can find species such as: murici, ipê-amarelo, ipê-tabaco, angicos, caixeta-preta, cambuí, urucurana, jequitibá, araribá, cedro, ingá, açoita-cavalo, pau-pereira, cangerana, canela, camboatá, palmito, brejaúba, samambaiaçu, queresmeira, caeté e pacova-além de musgos e liquens.

Tijuca’s Forest is so big that in order for you to visit all its beauty and historical constructions, you will need two days. Some of the main tourist points are:

Corcovado area: Cristo Redentor, Paineras, Mirante Dona Marta;

Observation points: Vista Chinesa, Mesa do Imperador, Mesa Redonda, Curva dos Bonecos;
